A few months back, we landed on info that singer Eddy Kenzo had turned down an offer from Galaxy FM management to perform at their Zzina Beach Carnival due on December 14. A source that attended the meeting between Kenzo and the station’s management, told us that Kenzo told them he wouldn’t perform at their show because he would be on an international tour. The management argued that Kenzo had come to the meeting because his manager had told them that date was free; however the singer told them that he is an international artiste, with international management and that his local management just oversees his music distribution in Uganda.
A week ago, we learnt that Kenzo had turned down Club Silk’s call to perform at their monthly Unplugged show.
Apparently, Kenzo asked for Shs6m to perform at the show yet Club Beer, the sponsors of the night only allocate Shs2m for the night’s performer in their budget. However, after consultations, the Club manager Stephen Kavuma upped his offer to Shs4.5m, but Kenzo was not about to go against his word.
We have heard similar complaints from other promoters that have accused Kenzo of asking for exorbitant fees.
However, a source within Kenzo’s Big Talent told us that for Club Silk’s case, Kavuma called and told Kenzo that they wanted to pair him with Rema for the Unplugged. “He (Kenzo) found it insulting; Rema was pregnant.” The source also defended his boss about turning down other local performances by saying. “Indeed Kenzo has a crazy international schedule. The days he spends in the country, it’s only advisable that he rests a bit. But he still loves his country and has so much respect for his local fans, because at the end of the day, they are his own people.”
