The content on almost every medium is so politically charged that I was wary about watching a political thriller in my down time. But a show with Robert De Niro, Plemons and Bassett was too good to pass up. That is how I ended up watching Zero Day yet I have been saying I need to cut back on consuming political content for my peace of mind. It was worth the gamble to a large extent.
In Zero Day, De Niro is former president turned author, George Mullen. After an incident with his book agent, it is discovered that someone has unleashed a cyberattack on the country’s telecommunications, transport and much more. President Mitchell (Bassett) appoints Mullen to lead the investigation.
However, he has more than the cyber attacker to contend with when his daughter, Alexandra (Caplan) protests his appointment. Conspiracies, suspicion and political maneuvers ensue in the six episodes. Zero Day feels like it should be more serious than it turns out to be. However, considering the fact that politics these days can be hard to take seriously, I’d say it’s on brand. The spinning and conspiracies are a bit much because you can tell that the writers had an agenda. But it is not so much that it bogs down the pace of the series. I would give it a 6.5.
