Like Mc Yallah said, Uganda is a bit slow with hip-hop. It is considered a dormant genre yet it has always stood up to the occasion. It is the only genre that is dedicated to providing a fair platform for all Ugandan hip-hop acts through an awards show that showcases the past, present, and future of the genre in Uganda.
Through the UG Hip Hop awards, several artistes are awarded for their work annually and this year, the celebrations happened at Somewhere Else bar and restaurant last Friday evening where 21 people walked away with accolades in different categories.
The biggest winners during the night were The Mith, who took two accolades in Lyricist of the year with his Conversessions and Mixtape of the year with his Systeemu.
Parte Yani, a song that topped charts last year featuring Ruyonga, Zex Bilangilangi and Wonder JR took two accolades in Song of the Year and Rap Fusion of the Year. These two categories were some of the obvious ones.
After being honoured with a lifetime achievement award, MC Yallah gave a few tips to other artistes doing Hip Hop, telling them not to be comfortable.
“Out there, Hip Hop is big. What I can tell the artistes out there is that persistence and patience are key in Hip Hop. The other secret that I can tell you is to get out of your comfort zone for us to go to another level,” she said.
Album of the Year went to Rickman Manrick with his Ndi Muto, Deejay of the Year went to DJ Jefas while Inspirational song of the year went to Isabirye Mitch’s Mboniire ft. Kabera Angel, KekoTown & Joses Arins Emanzi.
Wacha Maneno by Lagum the rapper featuring Denesi was voted video of the year, Trappex Booming won Producer of the Year, Ninja C won Female Rapper of the Year while Navio took Rapper of the Year in other respective categories.
The night that was hosted by Adele Kiele and Mr Skills was not only about accolades. It also featured performances as well and these came from artistes like Vudu child, Viboyo and OG Stash among others.
