Singer Zani Lady C’s song “Komawo” in the running for the Grammys

Zani Lady C

Ugandan singer Zani Lady C has been making waves on social media, particularly on TikTok, where her song “Charles Yimirira Awo” became a viral sensation. The track has been featured on countless TikTok challenges, appearing on users’ For You pages several times a day. From celebrities to everyday TikTok users, the catchy song has captured widespread attention.

Despite the massive success of “Charles Yimirira Awo,” which many assumed would be her entry for Grammy consideration, Zani Lady C has opted to submit another song, titled “Komawo,” for the prestigious award. She is seeking a nomination in the newly created category of Best African Music Performance for the 67th Grammy Awards.

The decision not to submit “Charles Yimirira Awo” may have surprised fans, but there’s a good reason. The song was originally released in 1999 and only resurfaced in popularity last month, thanks to the viral TikTok trend. Since Grammy rules often favor newer music, Zani chose to push “Komawo,” a fresh release, for Grammy consideration.

Fans of Zani Lady C can stream “Komawo” on platforms like YouTube and are encouraged by the singer to rally behind the song to increase its chances of receiving a nomination. The list of Grammy nominees is set to be announced on November 8, 2024, and the Grammy Awards ceremony will take place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on February 2, 2025.

Zani Lady C follows in the footsteps of fellow Ugandan artist Eddy Kenzo, who was nominated for a Grammy last year. His song “Gimme Love,” a collaboration with American singer Matt B, was nominated in the Best Global Music Performance category at the 2023 Grammys. Although Kenzo didn’t take home the award, which went to South African artists Wouter Kellerman, Zakes Bantwini, and Nomcebo Zikode for their song “Bayethe,” his achievement was a historic moment for Ugandan music on the international stage.

With Zani Lady C’s “Komawo” now in the running, Uganda’s presence in the global music industry continues to grow. Fans eagerly await the Grammy nominations to see if she can make history again and bring another milestone to Ugandan music.
