Strictly Soul is not just another music event, it’s a cultural movement that celebrates rhythm and blues in all its forms, bringing together thousands of R&B lovers across Africa. What started as an Instagram Live stream during the pandemic has grown into Africa’s largest R&B-focused events community, spanning nine cities in six countries. From Cape Town to Kigali, Strictly Soul has redefined the party scene, creating a safe, inclusive, and empowering space where people can connect through the soulful sounds of R&B.
At its core, Strictly Soul is more than just a party; it’s a celebration of music, art, and community. Curated by its music director and resident DJ, Akio Kawahito, the event showcases all styles of R&B, from Old School classics to Trap Soul, Neo-Soul, and even Afrobeats. With 20 years of entertainment experience, Akio headlines every event, guiding attendees through a musical journey that begins with slow, mellow vibes and crescendos into an all-out dance party. Each event is hosted by the dynamic Anita Makgetla, who ensures every guest feels welcomed and immersed in the spirit of the night. Together, they’ve crafted an experience that has taken cities across the continent by storm.
In 2020, Strictly Soul made its live event debut in South Africa, quickly expanding across the country and beyond. By 2023, the event had spread its soulful wings to Tanzania, Namibia, Kenya, Botswana, and most recently, Rwanda. But this year, it was Kampala’s turn to join the Strictly Soul family—and the city was more than ready.
On October 8, 2024, the much-anticipated Strictly Soul party made its debut in Kampala, Uganda, at the Golden Hill Restaurant and Lounge, located in the leafy, affluent suburb of Muyenga. From the moment the doors opened at 7 PM, it was clear that this would be a night to remember. With the city’s top R&B lovers gathered in one place, stylish surroundings, and an impeccable lineup of DJs, the stage was set for the ultimate soul music experience.
By 8 PM, Golden Hill was packed. As guests mingled over dinner and drinks, the slow, sultry sounds of soul music filled the air, creating a relaxed but electric atmosphere. DJ Akio, the mastermind behind the Strictly Soul movement, took the stage first, setting the tone with a smooth, well-curated playlist that eased the crowd into the evening.
Tracks like SiR’s “John Redcorn,” Hasan Insane and SZA’s “Love Galore,” and Erykah Badu’s timeless “Bag Lady” brought waves of nostalgia, while modern classics like D’Angelo’s “Brown Sugar” kept the crowd hooked. From 7 PM to 9 PM, Akio skillfully laid the foundation for an unforgettable night.
Adding to the night’s allure was the event’s official sponsor, Heineken. Each table was treated to complimentary beers, fueling the party from the start. Heineken didn’t stop there, offering special promotions throughout the night, with buckets of the drink available at a discounted price. The combination of great music and refreshing drinks elevated the experience, transforming the event into an all-night celebration.
It was great to see Heineken back on Uganda’s social scene, thanks to Blackshowmans (U) Ltd, the official distributor in Uganda.
As the evening progressed, DJ Joe, one of Uganda’s finest, took over the turntables around 9 PM, ramping up the energy with a soulful mix of tracks. Hits like Dripavaili’s “I Hate You,” Young Rio’s “Damage,” and Mary J. Blige’s “Be Happy” got the crowd singing along, lost in the music. By the time DJ Joe wrapped up at 11 PM, the party was in full swing.
But the night was far from over. DJ Em That Guy cranked the energy even higher with a set that had the crowd on its feet. From Wale’s “The Matrimony” to Chris Brown’s “Back to Sleep,” every track was a hit, and the crowd responded with enthusiasm. DJ Em kept the momentum going with bangers like Iyaz’s “Replay” and Jhené Aiko’s “The Worst,” turning the venue into a full-blown soul celebration.
As the clock neared 1 AM, Akio returned to close out the night in style. Mixing timeless R&B classics like Janet Jackson and Nelly’s “Call on Me” with newer hits, he made sure the night ended on a high note. The final hour was a soulful encore, embodying everything the event stands for: music, community, and good vibes. By the time the party wrapped up at 2 AM, the crowd was still buzzing, singing along to every last song.
To say the venue was packed is an understatement—Golden Hill was bursting at the seams. Fortunately, guests had the option to grab drinks from another bar on the second floor, easing the congestion.
Ending the night with Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” at 2 AM was a magical moment. Singing along with friends and strangers alike, hitting every note, was an unforgettable experience. It may not have been the song I would have chosen to close the night, but it was undoubtedly the one we didn’t know we needed.
With R&B now firmly taking root in Kampala, the city is in the midst of a “Soul Search,” and Strictly Soul has found its place at the heart of it all.
