Breakups can happen for a multitude of reasons, but for Zafaran, a rising star at Swangz Avenue, the final straw in her relationship came down to something unexpected: unpaid rent. In a candid interview on the Deep Talk show hosted on Galaxy TV, the Otulo singer revealed that she ended her relationship with her ex-boyfriend after he failed to support her financially when she needed help with rent.
Zafaran shared that her salary had been delayed, leaving her in a tough spot. When she turned to her boyfriend for assistance, she was met with disappointment. “I reached a point when my salary was delayed, and I asked him to bail me out because I expected some money from the band. He lied to me, and when I asked my landlord for more time, my boyfriend stopped picking up my calls. This wasn’t the first time he had lied, but it was the last time I could tolerate it, so I decided to break up with him,” Zafaran revealed.
At the time, the singer was struggling financially, earning just Shs30,000 from her performances with a band. This amount was barely enough to cover her growing expenses. She further explained that the constant financial strain, coupled with her boyfriend’s unreliability, pushed her to make the difficult decision to end the relationship.
Despite the challenges, Zafaran managed to get back on her feet after landing a wedding performance gig. The money she earned from this job allowed her to settle her rent and move forward. Reflecting on the experience, she noted that the financial struggles many artists face often go unnoticed, especially in the early stages of their careers.
“I was juggling so much, and when you’re an upcoming artist, people assume you’re financially stable because you’re on TV or in the spotlight, but that’s not always the case,” Zafaran explained. She added that while she’s moved on from the relationship, the experience taught her valuable lessons about self-reliance and the realities of the entertainment industry.
Zafaran’s candidness has sparked discussions about the financial pressures that artists, particularly women, face while trying to build their careers.
