ABBA tribute act brings memories to Uganda

The United Kingdom’s leading ABBA tribute act, ABBA Re-Björn, lit up Kampala in their debut performance in Uganda, captivating fans with a two-day musical spectacle.

The event, held on Friday, September 6, and Saturday, September 7 at Somewhere Else Bar and Restaurant in Naguru, Kampala, was a major success. With Nation Media, I&M Bank, and Uganda Breweries Limited (via their brands Gordon’s Gin and Tanqueray) as partners, both nights saw full attendance, with generations of music lovers dancing away in a nostalgic, throwback concert.

Fenon Events managed the production, handling the stage, sound, and lighting, earning high praise from the band itself. “Thank you for the good sound,” remarked Kelly, one of the performers, after their act. Upon learning that Fenon was behind it, she added, “Thank you so much, Fenon, for the awesome sound.”

Hosted by media personality Daggy Nyce, the concert’s buildup featured an array of 70s and 80s hits spun by house DJs, including timeless classics from Boney M, The Commodores, Billy Ocean, Kool & The Gang, Madonna, and Michael Jackson. The retro mixes set the perfect stage for the main event.

At 9:25 PM on Friday, the band, dressed in ABBA replica costumes, kicked off their set with the 1979 hit “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!,” a chart-topper across several European countries. They followed with “Super Trouper,” and by then, the crowd—featuring a mix of ages and races—was fully on their feet. The venue’s retro ambiance, highlighted by disco balls and an open dance floor, elevated the party atmosphere.

The crowd was treated to more classics like “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” “Voulez-Vous,” “Chiquitita,” and “Fernando”. The band kept the energy high with even more beloved hits such as “Take a Chance on Me,” “Mamma Mia,” and the timeless anthem “Dancing Queen.”

Interactive with the audience, the band also sang Happy Birthday to revelers celebrating their birthdays, adding a personal touch to the show. Many attendees came dressed in ABBA-inspired outfits—groovy suits, bell-bottom jeans, and disco-ready spandex catsuits—further adding to the nostalgic feel.

With Sam, Kelly, Toby, and Marcus on stage, ABBA Re-Björn delivered a concert experience that will be remembered fondly by Uganda’s music lovers. The full-time professional ABBA tribute band, known for their energetic performances and Swedish accents, has toured the world, bringing the magic of ABBA to audiences far and wide.
