Mama D cooks for Kiteezi landfill collapse victims

In the wake of the tragic landfill collapse at Kiteezi on Saturday, August 10, which left over 20 people dead, several injured, and others missing, the nation has been in mourning. The disaster, which occurred near the Kiteezi landfill in Kasangati Council, Wakiso District, also displaced more than 1,000 residents from Kiteezi and Lusanja villages. Many homes were either directly hit by the collapsing garbage or had to be demolished to facilitate rescue efforts.

Since the tragedy, various government ministries, agencies, and well-wishers have rallied to provide essential relief and support to the victims, survivors, and affected families. Among those offering their help is chef Dorcus Kirabika Basheba, popularly known as Mama D.

While the government has already distributed food supplies to the affected residents, Mama D felt it was important to provide freshly cooked meals. With the support of her friends, fans, and other well-wishers, Mama D delivered a special meal on Tuesday morning to those currently sheltered at Kiteezi Church of Uganda Primary School, where an emergency camp has been set up to temporarily house the displaced residents.

Speaking about her motivation, Mama D explained that this act of kindness was her way of giving back to the Ugandans who had shown her immense love and support during her attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest time spent cooking as an individual.

“As I watched the news, I asked myself, ‘Who made me Mama D?’ And the answer is Ugandans. Many Ugandans made me who I am, so it’s hard to say who supported me and who didn’t. That’s why I decided to use my social media to express my intention of helping these Ugandans and requested financial assistance,” Mama D said.

She continued, “People motivated me to do it with the financial support they extended. Some individuals contributed over 100 kilograms of rice, while others provided essential items like sanitary towels.”

This isn’t the first time the controversial chef has engaged in philanthropic activities. Recently, she provided meals to legal teams and anti-corruption activists who were arrested during the protests on Parliament Avenue.
