American filmmaker Jonathan Stack led a workshop at the MCI Media Hub in Kabalagala, guiding young Ugandan content creators on crafting impactful stories. Stack emphasized the importance of intimacy and trust in storytelling, saying, “When making a documentary, it’s not just about information, but about how close you can get to your characters, making your audience feel like they know them.”
As CEO and co-founder of World Vasectomy Day, Stack shared his expertise on leveraging content creation for social justice, public health, and community projects. With over 20 years of experience producing over 50 documentary films, Stack stressed the power of storytelling in driving social change. He encouraged creators to use their platforms to raise awareness about pressing issues and provided practical tips on crafting compelling narratives and reaching wider audiences.
Stack advised the creators to be confident and ambitious in their pursuit of stories, saying, “Your ability to get access to a story is your ability to talk and write better. Don’t be afraid to ask, and be willing to take risks.” He also screened his film, “The Farm,” and engaged in a discussion with the participants.
The event provided a unique opportunity for participants to showcase their work, including Agatha Christie Akello’s mental health podcast, “PopcornThoughts.” Participants expressed their enthusiasm for using their skills to contribute to community development and advocate for important social issues in Uganda.
Sheila Gabeya, Program Director at WVD Africa, expressed her hope for future collaborations, saying, “I hope we can work together to create content that educates communities about sexual health and mental health, especially for men.”
According to a 2022 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) report titled “Re/shaping Policies for Creativity”, the cultural sector has the potential to drive sustainable economic growth in developing countries, accounting for 3.1% of global GDP and 6.2% of all employment.
