Beautiful skies, clear azure water and scenes from the underwater sealife that explain why people find aquariums fascinating. Bloodied water, sharks tearing into bodies at sea, and drug dealers wreaking havoc during a violent storm. These are both scenes from Deep Fear. The movie is about Naomi, who works and lives on the clear water, which is part of the mystery at the movie’s start. It is a mystery because we first meet her as a child caught in a storm with her parents. You would think that she would have a phobia of the sea but that is not the case. Instead, she takes tourists on her yacht, and includes deep-diving in her repertoire. She is so comfortable in the water that her response to seeing a shark is to pat it. Unprovoked. However, this is not the main gist of the movie.

The story is actually about her sailing to meet her partner, (Westwick), who has got new clients. On the way, she runs into a shipwreck with people crying out for help. Despite Jackson’s advice to only call it in but not try to rescue them and put herself in the course of the storm, she helps them. They turn out to be drug dealers who force her to dive into the sea to their wrecked ship and recover their drugs, putting her in danger of being eaten by the sharks which are circling the wreck.

The movie’s saving grace is the cinematography. It is such a well-shot movie. Even the shark scenes are beautiful. However, the story is so slow-paced that it takes a while for us to figure out where the plot is taking us. I know story buildup is important but not at this pace. The acting was also meh. Not bad but nothing to write home about either. If you are looking for a movie that does not require too much attention, Deep Fear is it. If you are looking to be entertained, search for something else.
