The inaugural Social Media Awards are on today (Friday) at the Hub, Oasis Mall starting at 5pm. The awards seek to reward individuals and organisations that are at the forefront when it comes to using social media for sharing ideas, entertainment, impacting on the online community positively and communicating to customers.
The awards that are organised by Bluflamingo, a digital media agency. According to Dorothy Kisarale, Content Executive at Blu Flamingo, they used Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and all the commonly used social media platforms to come up with the nominations. “We figured it would be a good way to pick up these awards since Rwanda, Kenya and other East African countries hold them,” she says.
Prizes
There are so many prizes to be won today, like cash, tablets and routers. There’s also a great opportunity for the nominees to meet and interact on a brand and individual level.
Voting has also been ongoing and Kisarale reassures the nominees, “our database automatically verified the results so we’re ready for the event.”

Favourite Celebrity
This award goes to the one celebrated individual that employed the best use of social media to further their brand, connect with their fans and engage and captivate their audiences.
Best Customer Care
This award goes to the business or organisation that best uses social media to assist their customers in using and optimising value obtained from their services and products, from resolution time to efficiency and number of queries handled per day, as voted by the consumer- the friendliest fastest and most helpful organization/business online.
Best Crisis Management
This award goes out to the business or organisation that best uses social media to relate with the public and stakeholders, to best deal with a sudden emergency situation. Using a set of procedures applied in handling, containment, and resolution of an emergency in planned and coordinated steps.
Other categories include; Entertainment award, Best Blog / Blogger, Social Justice
Award, Corporate Award, News and Information Award, Civil Service Award, Best Campaign, Best Innovation, Best Photography and Best TV/Radio station or newspaper.
