Gospel Singer Scovia Ainomugisha dies

Western gospel music fraternity is mourning the death of their colleague Scovia Ainomugisha who breathed her last at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital on Monday morning after a long Kidney illness.

Ainomugisha had been battling issues of Kidney failure for a long and was required to raise Shs150m for an advanced kidney transplant in India. In the process of raising the money fellow gospel singers staged a charity concert that happened on June 25, 2023, at King of Kings Church in Mbarara City, but they were unable to raise all the required amount.

Gospel musician Geoffrey Beingana says he was saddened by the death of Ainomugisha, regretting for failure to raise the money to facilitate her specialised treatment in India

“Her son called me to tell me that she had died. We had raised over Shs20m, some had pledged and had not brought the balance and some of the money that had been collected was used to facilitate Medicare as she was waiting to go to India,” he said.

He added: “We were hopeful that she would get well if we got money and she went to India but we are saddened by her death, may her soul rest in peace.”

Scovia Ainomugisha is famous for songs like ‘Ninyenda Nkurebe, Nkwata Omukono, Embaga, and Nankogu Ft Lauben T among others.

Ainomugisha, 43, learnt about her kidney illness in 2019 after being diagnosed by Dr Rose Muhindo of Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) who advised and referred her to India for a specialised Kidney transplant.

“I am in pain, I got kidney failure in 2019 after suffering so many illnesses. I started by growing thin until when I went to the hospital for diagnosis and found both my kidneys had been affected but only one was critically ill. I started taking drugs and doing weekly medical check-ups. Doctors later advised me to be put in a specialized machine to filter my blood cells (hemodialysis) and then they referred me to India for a kidney transplant,” she said in a previous interview.

She is survived by five children, and her body will be laid to rest in Ruhumba, Rubindi Kashari in Mbarara District on Tuesday.
