Years have gone by since the perspective of salon and hair business was for only women. Over the years, men have taken over the business and with each year that comes by, there is a man somewhere in Uganda running a hair business. Arnold Tusiime Apuuli, a young and vibrant man 2019 joined the business and this was the beginning of Apuuli Hairstylist.
Apuuli Hairstylist started small but currently boasts of two locations with one located at the basement of the Cube at Kisementi in Kamwokya and the other location found in Buziga along Lukuli road. Apuuli’s salon consists of hairstylists and barbers whom he says have vast experience in the salon business.
According to Apuuli, his business is driven by a mission to empower the disadvantaged and uplift lives in rural areas. “My company firmly believes that every individual deserves access to opportunities that enable personal growth and economic prosperity,” Apuuli says. He goes on to say that as Apuuli Hairstylist is up and running, his major goal is to create sustainable income solutions for more than 200 individuals facing socio-economic challenges in Kasese and Fort Portal since the Tooro region is where his story began.
He believes that he can do this by equipping individuals with the necessary expertise and resources to establish their own thriving businesses.
With just a few years in business, Apuuli has already gotten the chance to collaborate with Reach a Hand Uganda and Sauti Plus Media Hub on two film projects dubbed ‘When You Become Me’ and ‘Sabotage’. On the projects, Apuuli Hairstylist will be the trusted provider of professional makeup and hair styling services for the cast.
Apuuli was born and raised in Fort Portal by a single mother in a humble family of 6. His journey into the world of cosmetology began as a child when he watched his mother do her hair at home. Apuuli was fascinated by the transformation, from the initial steps to the final outcome. It was from then that he started experimenting and practicing on his siblings. Apuuli’s passion for hairstyling grew and he even started growing his own hair.
After completing Primary school at St Joseph and Gabriel Jr Seminary, he moved to Fort Portal S.S. for his secondary school. His formal training in cosmetology began when he joined Zziwa Hair Academy as the first student in 2018. After completing the course, he started working at Hair by Zziwa and later became a mobile hairstylist.
Determined to pursue his passion further, Apuuli opened his first salon. Shortly after, Covid hit which setback and forced him to offer mobile services.
Despite the challenges, he found unexpected financial blessings in working from home, and by the end of the first lockdown, he managed to pay rent and make an upfront payment for his own salon. With hard work, his client base grew rapidly. Apuuli now boasts a wide range of clientele at both branches.
