Stacy (Sunny Sandler) and Lydia (Lorraine) are best friends who have looked forward to their Bat Mitzvahs for the longest time. The constant being that their BFF will be present. However, this plan falls apart during a party and the subsequent boy drama which follows. That is how this recent comedy from Adam Sandler’s production company gets its name, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.
The movie is a sweet, proper coming-of-age movie. Sammi Cohen understands 13-year-olds and it shows in her direction. We know what Stacy’s reaction to Andy (Hoffman) because of how the scene plays out — with all the drama you would expect from a 13-year-old. The movie is based on a 2005 novel of the same title but the screenplay clearly captures today’s teenage trends. So it is not surprising that we have TikTok-esque scenes.
There has been talk of nepo babies lately, usually from a negative angle. So, of course, the movie has received its share of criticism on that front. I always say if nepo babies can follow in their parents’ footsteps and do a good job, good for them. Sunny and Sadie Sandler do a good job in this case, alongside their father who takes a noticeable backseat role in this movie. They clearly have their father’s screen rizz and I am here for it.
This is a good watch if you are a fan of the young adult genre. Some Jewish references may be lost on you but it is not too bad.
