This story of a diplomat trying to override politics and personal dilemmas has been told a couple of times. That’s why it is a wonder that it remains intriguing no matter what angle the story takes.
In this version of The Diplomat, Kate Wyler (Russell) loves the down and dirty part of diplomacy as opposed to the “ceremonial” aspects as she refers to them. So she is not amused when she is appointed ambassador to the UK just when she thought she was headed to Afghanistan. Her husband, Hal (Sewell) on the other hand, seems better suited to the role but he is currently a diplomat without an assignment. This tension in their relationship is just the tip of the iceberg of the drama that ensues.
The Diplomat may be a political show but you’ll enjoy it more if you don’t think about it in that light. The dynamic between Kate and Hal plays into almost everything else taking place. The show has a slow start and assumes everyone watching has their geopolitics on point. But that doesn’t stop it from being binge worthy.
