Afrigo’s Eddy Ganja mourns wife with new song The Darkest Night

Eddy Ganja

For years now, the name Eddy Ganja has always been associated with instruments, especially in Afrigo Band which he’s part of, but this time round, the guitarist is finally putting vocals to his name.

Released in Johannesburg – South Africa, The Darkest Night is Ganja’s latest single, an English song with lyrics that evokes emotions following a tragedy that befell him mid last year.

A member of the legendary Afrigo band, Ganja drowns his sorrows in the lyrics expressing how he misses and chooses to mourn his late wife.

“The song takes me back to the days when my wife fell terminally ill, and I felt helpless. I painfully watched as she died,” he explains.

However, there is more to the song than mourning given that it was produced with good chords, melodies on a delectable solo guitar with powerful percussion making it very relatable.

The song whose kick is blended with a sound of a saxophone, appreciates South African jazz music with a wide range of dynamic music knots, making it easy to listen and dance to.

Ganja says that he composed the song and named it The Darkest Night because it came from a place of hurt and intended to help him start a new journey of dealing with the heartache and accept a new reality.

“It is hard losing a loved one, I live with a vivid memory of what happened during the darkest night of my life and I find solace in singing about her,”he adds

Ganja’s wife Rosette Nabirye was pronounced dead on June 5, 2021 following a hard fought battle with a terminal illness.

A composer, guitarist and songwriter Eddie Ganja started his music journey early in 1969 with the Crane Band before joining Afrigo Band in 1978. He is also a mentor to many young guitarists and an inspiration to his sons as they also decided to join the music.

The 67-year-old is father to musician Ganja Nanna alias Nana Genius, and South African -based movie actor Phillip Ganja who featured in a South African top movie “Welcome to South Africa” and Grammy Academy member MC Norman Ganja.
