A menstrual cause through fashion

May 28 every year is marked as World Menstrual Hygiene Day since 2014 and in Uganda, The Wellbeing Foundation in partnership with Wuzi Africa decided to commemorate the day with a fashion showcase to support girls who face a challenge of menstration periods.

The second edition of the Menstrual Shebang Fashion Show happened last Saturday evening at Design Hub in Kampala, featuring seven different fashion designers who showcased different outfits that directly sent out the message of menstrual hygiene and sexual reproductive health and rights.

The models took to the runway in outfits designed by Yasmine Kalungi, Aliad Zoe, Jamila Brown, Shurea, Bantu, Musema and Maggie.

The Menstrual Shebang Fashion Show is a platform created for creatives in different fields to start a conversation on sexual reproductive health and rights and at the same time promote menstrual hygiene in the Ugandan society.

According to Yasmine Kalungi, the showcase was used to pass on a message about menstration.

“Women and girls are not supposed to be shy about menstration. We have used different collections that had different inspirations. My collection was limitless and shows that a woman out there should not be stopped no matter the situation because women are phenomenon,” she said.

Kalungi also added that the fashion showcase was used to give a platform to different designers to exhibit their work and create awareness.

Shyaka Farid Lwanyaaga, the founder of The Wellbeing Foundation, said as an organisation, they are committed to promoting menstrual hygiene and also address issues of sexual reproductive health and rights and the fashion show was the best way to address the issues in a fun and interactive way.
