The Weekend Away is not about sandy beaches and mojitos – there is nothing relaxing about watching this movie. Full disclosure. The movie is about Beth, who meets her friend, Kate in Croatia for a holiday –at least the holiday bit is in there somewhere.

After a night out, Kate goes missing, which is putting it mildly, considering the movie starts with a body floating on water. Kate spends what should have been a holiday trying to solve the mystery of what happened to her friend.

This movie’s plot reminds me of Lingala. Just when you think the song is done, it builds up again. If you have read the book on which it is based, this won’t come as a surprise. For the rest of us, the twists and turns came at just the right time, before boredom set in. The plot is not necessarily new but Meester’s distraughtness keeps things interesting. If plot twists are not your cuppa tea, the movie might irritate you.

Definitely a good break from whatever show you are currently binging on.

It goes without saying that this is not a movie for the entire family. From Beth encouraging Kate to consume copious amounts of alcohol without taking water (we know this is never a good idea), the movie is laced with bad decisions.
