Lockdown resurrected my talent – Mutabaruka

Evans Mutabaruka is a civil engineer. Like many people who were affected by the lockdown, he has struggled too, but instead of worrying about how to make ends meet, he re-discovered his music talent. He shares with Rajab Mukombozi.

What inspired you to join music?

I joined music as a passion. Back in the village, there was a choir that used to sing at parties and I joined it. I also joined a church choir and became a member of all the choirs in secondary school. After high school, I gave music a break and concentrated on books.

When and how did you start?

I started last year during the Covid-19 lockdown. I used the boredom to record my first song after I met a friend who knew my talent. He gave me the idea and since I had the passion, I gave it a shot.

What kind of music do you do?

Mostly gospel music and inspirational songs and I have released four songs so far, but three have videos. These include “Kankweshongorere”, “Tulambule Twayanga” and “Nyaubura Yahweh”.

What keeps you going?

I love what I do. In a short time, I have been able to rediscover my talent and I have received good feedback from fans and friends who keep encouraging me. My songs receiving airplay on different media houses gives me courage that my music is appealing.

Who is that artiste that inspires you?

I like inspirational songs and I can say R.Kelly is my idol. Locally, I cannot mention a particular artiste but I am patriotic, I like Ugandan music.

How do you balance your profession and music?

I joined music as a passion not a career, so I programme myself to do my engineering work and the music during my free time and on weekends. I am also self-employed so I can easily balance the two.

What are some of the things you have achieved since you started music?

It has not been long. I have not moved out because of Covid-19 restrictions but I have made a breakthrough, considering the fanbase and airplay I have received. I have also been able to meet high-ranking people and made more friends because of music.

What are some of the challenges you have faced so far?

Recording songs and shooting videos requires some good money and with the Covid-19 lockdown, it is still a challenge because there are no concerts allowed. I only market my music through social media, which is also a challenge.

Any advice to upcoming stars?

I advise fellow upcoming artistes to always have a backup plan, not to see music as the only way to succeed and survive. You can start a business as an alternative means of survival. They should also endeavour to be themselves other than copying others, stop being jealous and trust in God.

Who is Evans Mutabaruka?

I was born in 1990 in Mwengura, Bushenyi District. I attended Kyamacumu Primary School, Bugongi Primary School, Uganda Technical College-Kahaya in Bushenyi and then Kyambogo University where I studied civil engineering.
