I don’t want to be an ordinary producer – Mulwanyi

Andrew Mulwanyi

Producer. Andrew Mulwanyi is a producer at IceBear Media, a production house in Kampala. He oversees all television production from conception to completion. Eric Ntalumbwa talks to him about work, women and faith.

Describe yourself in three words
Hardworking, go-getter and passionate about my work.

What is the most awesome thing about your job?
My job enables me to travel in and out of the country. I have met people from all walks of life, including the president of Uganda.

Do cameramen make serious marriage partners?
(Chuckles) Loyalty in marriage has nothing to do with the career path one chose. It has a lot to do with someone’s personality. Someone can cheat in any profession if they want to and they can still choose to remain loyal and faithful to their partners. Of course, photography involves travelling and sometimes, in the line of duty, one may get tempted. But it should stop at that.

Are you married?
I have a fiancée with two lovely boys

What is the most ridiculous thing you have done in production?
Two years ago, I was assigned to film a graduation ceremony. When the filming was done, we got back to studio to organise footage to tell a meaningful story. But alas! One of my colleagues edited the video clip and used a funeral song as a sound bed. A few hours before delivery, I watched the clip and I was dumbfounded. I requested the client for more time to re-edit the work.

What challenges do producers face?
There are clients who think they are more knowledgeable than a production house. They make unrealistic demands and even when you try to use your expertise to advise them, they barely listen. Later, they regret when you deliver poor quality work.

Best moment so far?
When my fiancee introduced me to her family at a Kukyala ceremony in Masaka. I have been covering other people’s ceremonies but in 2017, I enjoyed looking at photographers as they struggled to take the best shots at my function.

What camera would you like to possess?
A Sony XDCAM because it is user-friendly. Because of the changing technology, the market has new and better cameras and some are so pricey.

How often do you go to church?
Three times a month.

Any big plans?
Yes. I am working tirelessly hard to ensure that IceBear scoops a position among the three leading production houses in the Uganda. I don’t want to be an ordinary producer. I must leave a mark or legacy.

What is your favourite bible scripture?
John 9:1-41: A man born blind receives sight. In those scriptures, there is a part where Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned. But this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
