The music video :KATA – NAVIO

Navio

Navio

Kata is not your ordinary Ugandan hip hop video. The features and creativity in this video are embalmed with the seams that fuse Ugandan culture into hip hop. Kata is one video that combines and reflects freedom and having a “blast” in just three minutes.

The video runs smoothly and is parallel to the song.  It starts off with Navio softly springing out of a traditional African hut and hits climax with colourful night scenes of dancers doing the Kata dance. Kata in Swahili means ‘cut’, and the dancers reflect this in their gyrations and hand movements.

The routines are fantastically choreographed and camera movement is well coordinated. Though there is continual switching between Navio and the jovial dancers, the video does not
lose focus. The images in Kata cut through minimally and the intensity between the percussion drummers and dancers is not lost. The minimal edits set the video away from the generic hustle and bustle of hip hop videos

Kata stands out for making great use of the outdoor lighting and keeping post production
digital effects at its lowest. The drums, the huts and the crystal clear high definition video
format all reinforce the ‘blasty-tripsy’ notions of the song’s richness. We like.
