Miss Uganda-UK flies home to help the blind

Peninah Wampamba is Miss Uganda-UK.

The Miss Uganda-UK has arrived in Uganda for a charity work, which will last for about two weeks.
Ms Peninah Wampamba, who is also a student of paediatric nursing at University of Salford, will donate assortment of items to Salama School of the Blind in Mukono District and Gombe General Hospital Paediatric Ward.

“I am asking Uganda to join hands with me and the team as we raise money that will go towards Salama School of the Blind and Gombe Hospital children’s ward. The money raised will be split evenly between the two organisations all of which will help children and young people; which was the focus of my Miss Uganda-UK Campaign,” she said.

Ms Wampamba said they held discussions with the management of Salama School for the Blind, who requested for medical sunglasses, sanitary pads, blankets, bed sheets, clothes (age of 8-15years), mattresses and braille machines.

“The campaign is composed of collection of these items and shipping them to Uganda. The money raised will be used to pay for shipping and purchase,” she said.

The Miss Uganda-UK said staying out of the country did not detach her from her origin, saying that despite moving to UK at the age of seven, she is proud of her ancestry.

“Living in the diaspora has taught me that if you do not know where you came from, you struggle to know where you are going. Our heritage is important in knowing our identity and what our role is within this society. Hence why I wanted to go back to my grandfather’s village,” she said.

Ms Wampamba will also do her internship at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital for the next several months.
