Supporting Bobi Wine’s People Power not a crime, says police chief- VIDEO

Inspector General of Police, Martin Okoth Ochola

The Inspector General of Police, Martin Okoth Ochola has warned security officers against engaging in acts of torture.

The IGP said any officer caught on the wrong side of the law shall be personally criminally liable for their actions.

Citing recent cases where some supporters of Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi accused police officers of torturing them, Ochola said supporting People Power, a political movement led and popularized by the singer cum politician is not a crime.

“One time it went viral when some police officers in Kajjansi were torturing some people for being members of People Power. Is it an offence to belong to people power! Under what section of the Penal code?” the IGP wondered.

He was on Monday speaking at a workshop of senior police officers at the Police Senior Command and Staff College in Bwebajja.

However, Ochola said he won’t tolerate acts hooliganism for as long as he’s the IGP.

“You cannot allow lumpens to take advantage that People Power… and begin..no! That must stop. You must exert authority,” he added.

The purpose of the meeting with senior police officers was to discuss how the force can best be run.
