Police have denied having arrested Bobi Wine minutes after he landed at Entebbe airport. The Inspector General of Police Martins Okoth-Ochola has tweeting that “nobody has arrested him (Bobi Wine)”.
“We are just simply escorting and providing security to him as we promised yesterday. He (Bobi) is heading home,” he has tweeted.
A video taken by a bystander shows a convoy of nine speeding vehicles, among them a white Prado with tinted windows, similar to the one security forces used to pick the lawmaker on the airport tarmac as he disembarked from a Kenyan Airways (KQ) plane.
In the motorcade was a police lead car, ambulance and two large police trucks speeding on a largely deserted thoroughfare.
People partly captured in the video clip can be heard shouting “people power”, Bobi Wine’s slogan.
Uncertainly remains on whereabouts of the legislator who had just flown in after almost three weeks away in the United States ostensibly for specialised medical care following what he said was his brutal torture in military custody on August 13.
Our journalists Abubaker Lubowa and Derrick Wandera, who are on the ground, say the convoy sped past Bobi’s home in Magere, where people were already jubilating, and the vehicles are now parked at Kasangati Police Station.
No one knows if he is in one of the cars at the police station or was switched to another vehicle during the trip from the airport as a decoy.
Security is tight and journalists are jostling for prime spots to grab the best images in case Bobi Wine is, as suspected, in the white Prado with tinted windows and chooses to exit it.
A crowd of loudly-chanting constituents of the MP is building outside the police station.
