After the ringer Avengers Infinity War put us through, and knowing that any form of closure on that part is coming next year, and not a month sooner, Marvel fans need some fun for distraction. Paul Rudd and his antics look like just the right bite of fun.
The events of Ant-Man and the Wasp do not pick up from Ant-Man but rather from Captain America: Civil War. They are also set before Infinity War so do not go in expecting to get some answers on that front. Just putting that out there for continuity buffs.
Following his misadventures with the law, Scott Lang aka Ant-Man (Rudd) is on house arrest and more interested in being a good father than being Ant-Man.
Things seem to be going well until Hope van Dyne aka Wasp (Lilly) and her father Hank Pym (Douglas) come to him for help. Then there is the issue of Sonny Burch (Goggins) who wants Hank’s technology for his own interests.
Hank’s technology is what enables all the size shifting that happens in the movie, so it is a big deal.
Like the first movie illustrated, Ant-Man is not trying to be as big of a blockbuster as the other Marvel movies. Instead, it is a fun break from all the tension we get from the other movies. With Rudd not just in the lead but also as one of the scriptwriters, fun is guaranteed.
From clever one-liners to banter with Ant-Man’s crew —which includes Michael Pena — there are a lot of laughs to go around.
Then there is the cinematography! When you have people, cars, and buildings becoming tiny-sized, you are going to be clever with your cameras. It is clear a lot of ‘clever’ was employed here.
That scene where Ant-Man slides across a knife meant for him –so cool! Considering the roll Marvel has been on, I was expecting some signs of slacking off but no.
