Last week, many could have easily noticed when Africa Day easily passed without a signature celebration from Multichoice and DSTV.
Over the years, the pay TV has created a reputation of hosting themed events around visual art, film, poetry in celebration of Africa every May 25.
This year though, the celebrations were pushed to May 30 to coincide with their continental launch of the Talent Factory, an initiative intended at creating an experimental learning programme that will select 60 participants from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, Zambia, and Namibia among others.
The training hubs divided according to regions of East, West and South will each have 20 participants – the East African hub will be in Nairobi.
The twenty selected students will receive a full year well structured film training that they believes will be used to enhance African storytelling.
In a message posted from Njoki Muhoho, the East African academy director, she noted that the factory is not a competition but a boot camp, “It is the boiling point through which we we want to tell our story and import it to the outside world.”
A programme that the pay TV wants to carry on is considered as a springboard for the service providers to tap into African stories that some they hope will end up on their flagship channels like Maisha Magic East, Zambezi and Africa Magic among others.
According to Mathew Nabwiso, a film actor and producer, the opportunity is a blessing to emmerging film makers who will definately benefit from the exposure and a chance to collaborate.
Entries for the Talent Factory opened earlier today for people between 18-26 years old.
