Gravity Omuttuju
Imagine looking for what to write and your brain decides to give you ideas of Gravity Omutujju. Just imagine that for a second! I might need a brain transplant. As my brain goes on leave, kindly accept any unusual things it might bring you. Well, Gravity. Where do I start? You have got to be the most insane musician to call yourself Gravity. Did the man himself stay long in school to endure those painful Physics classes about Gravity? With that hairstyle of his, I highly doubt. I must say I find him a tad too irritating. He reminds me of the kids my parents never wanted me to play with back in the day. You remember those long “don’t play with so and so from the neighbourhood” lectures? The kid who passed and your mum would go like, “don’t be like that thug”. Looking at Gravity, I just get those vibes. The music itself is difficult to endure but I must admit some people love him.
As unbelievable as that sounds, he has a following. I remember I was driving through jam at Forest Mall in Lugogo, ready to get into Jinja Road. I chanced on a bunch of kids swarmed at a guy’s car, only to peep through and see Gravity with his odd hair. They were starstruck, like they had seen their hero and there I was, hating. There is no amount of shade that can take away the fact that this guy has earned his bread. While I find him limited sometimes in his music, I acknowledge a guy who is obsessed with his craft that he will go to lengths to make you like it. He has pushed his music for many years now, churning out hits and chuff alike. Along with Eddy Kenzo and Bebe Cool, this guy is one of the most aggressive artistes in the land. By aggression, I mean putting work out there for everyone to see. You can call him local, a one dimensional artiste but he leaves his heart there. I think a testimony that talent with hardwork can get you somewhere. A non-achiever like myself can only hate but deep inside give credit.
Now recently, Gravity Omutujju tried to “feel big” and take his concert to Cricket Oval in what was dubbed the “Mujje Tujuze Cricket Oval” That was when I thought this ‘terrorist’ had gone mad. Bigger artistes would dare not take a show there but here is a guy, small in size but a giant in grit hoping to fill Cricket Oval. And guess what, the guy did exactly that. Well, not entirely but close. His ‘gangos’ came through to support, he pulled off his antics of arriving in a crane and he made history for someone of his status in the industry. No one expected those numbers to turn up, which got me thinking. The only thing that separates us from our dreams turning into reality is sheer belief. Just the belief to think that you could take over the world, regardless of size, background or whatever barrier thrown at you. Well, kudos Omutujju!
