They are weird and come off looking like a mixture of a skirt and shorts or pant. But since they are trending and fashionsitas are rocking them.
There’s things in fashion you can’t just understand, like how certain trends become so popular without necessarily being pretty or flattering. For example the harem pants and just before we get over that, another pretty ugly trend has started making appearances on the fashion scene, the culottes.
Here’s the deal on the culotte. It is not a skirt, a shorts or a pant. But it is fashionable and judging from the way a few very fashion forward people have been wearing it, it is poised to become a big thing. So here’s an advisory to trend worshippers, now’s the time to rush and get yourself a pair, when it is still early and you can still be the first one among your friends to wear it.
The types: There’s variety, from above the knee short like styles, to mid-calf, ankle grazing, all the way to full-length culottes. The common factor is that they all look like skirts, only separated in the middle to look like pants and just like skirts they run the whole gamut from floaty floral to more sleek a line designs. Culottes also come in high waist normal waistband and elastic.
Bearing in mind that a lot of us think fitting means tight, it is important to clarify this. Culotte is not to be confused with bell bottoms or palazzo pants that are tight at the waist and hip and flared at the bottom. The whole idea of wearing culotte is the loose fit all the way so the only tight place should probably be the waist
How to match them up: Because they are free and floaty, culottes need to be worn with a form fitting top, something I have noticed is with a polo neck and long chain a la nineties style. Shorter tight tops look great on culottes, tuck in longer ones and you will still look good. Vintage blouses tucked in can look great with high waist culottes and a cute cropped jacket ties up the look nicely.
If you are wondering what shoes to wear with the culottes, think about what you would wear with a skirt of the same style. Shorter culottes go well with ankle boots, a cute pair of pumps.Midlength go with pretty much any shoes with a heel. Strappy sandals will work for full length, cullotes.
