Tom Cruise returns to give the bad guys a good beating
Jack Reacher (Cruise) is back to beat up the bad guys and given even the good guys a hard time. In the second adaption of the character from Lee Child’s books, Reacher goes back to his army roots. Going back, however, comes with its troubles, which may explain the Never Go back bit of the title.
The plot involves Reacher proving that Major Turner (Smulders) who heads his old army unit, is innocent of the treason she is being accused of. This would seem like a straight up plot but where would the fun in that be? So, of course, there are several twists and turns where people are not who they claim to be. Again, nothing new when we are talking about anything involving espionage.
Enter Reacher’s dry humour and the effortless way he takes the bad guys down. That is what makes this movie interesting. Sure there are some good effects and fighting scenes. But Cruise wears that self-assured character so well that he becomes the most fascinating part about the movie. Smulders also plays her supporting role so well that while Reacher may be out to save her life, she is just as determined to get to the bottom of the problem. Blame it on my Marvel Agents of Shield mania that has always made me want to see her Agent Hill character in more action sequences. Whatever it is, it was nice to see her in full action in this one.
In short, this is a straight good guys vs bad guys movie that is interesting enough not to be clichéd, and with just the right plot dimensions to keep things uncomplicated. The kind of movie to watch when you do not want to think too much but also want to be stimulated enough not to kill your brain cells.
