Three years ago when deejays Roja and Slick-Stuart decided to have their inaugural mixtape party, few doubted them, saying it would flop because it had never been done before; besides, they said, no one knew them. The event sold out and plans to have the 2nd party were underway the following year which also yielded profits.
This year, the duo decided to have the 3rd mixtape party at the same venue as the previous editions (Laftaz swimming pool) with a lot more added to the event. KFM radio and Sqoop magazine under Daily Monitor were on board to sponsor the event and, the two had just won the Deejay Duo of the year in Nigerian Entertainment awards. It was therefore expected that the event would be successful. Going by the number of people who turned up, the organization and the supporting acts, it was successful.
Roja and SlickStuart made a grand entrance by emerging from backstage while dancers were still entertaining the crowds, at fifteen minutes past midnight. If it wasn’t for the sparklers and the matching blue fitting suits, the crowd wouldn’t have noticed them.
They headed to the deejays booth after getting a few photo moments and started off with their mixing which involved RnB, Afrobeat, Hip Hop, oldies and local jams. Already, the crowd was hyper and danced to every track they mixed, some shouting and singing along to their favourite songs in the process.
Besides the deejay duo, Joseph Sax playing the saxophone and Michael Ouma on the guitar were the best performers during the evening with their instrumental partnership. They kept the audience hooked to their rendition of tracks like Nkwatako, Olindaba, Sorry and others.
Vampino and comedian Jaaja Bruce also made decent performances as well as Roden Y who just invaded the stage when his song Kabako was played.
It was, at the end of the night, a good performance.
