After Jaws, I was convinced that no movie about sharks could ever really get my attention. Again, a movie comes along to prove me wrong. The Shallows definitely made the hairs on my skin rise, even resolving that this would not happen. See this movie was promoted so much that it felt like I had watched it. But it looks like this is one of those few movies which give us just enough for us to get the idea but don’t give away the entire plot –not something we see a lot these days.
The Shallows stars other people but for the most part of the movie, we see Blake Lively’s character Nancy Adams only. Nancy has just lost her mother so she goes on a surfing vacation. During the vacation she is separated from two other people on the trip, and is attacked by a shark. She manages to find refuge on a rock and tend to her injuries. The rest of the movie is her trying to outsmart the shark while hanging out with Steven Seagull (yes, it is an actual seagull).
From this short description, you can see why I didn’t expect any thrills. And maybe having low expectations is to blame for how much I actually enjoyed the movie but that would be a lie. Lively’s performance also had a lot to do with it. It is no mean feat to keep audiences interested when it is just you, a shark and a seagull involved yet that is what Lively did –keep us interested. The movie was also a nice break from the sequels, remakes and silly comedies that have been dominating theatres recently.
