Confusion rocks second entertainment awards

“Nana Kagga kept insisting that they should rectify the teleprompter. At first we thought she was being melodramatic but then the rest of the night was a bloody mess,” said Sheilah Nabatanzi, one of the guests at the second edition of Uganda Entertainment Awards at the Kampala Serena Hotel on Friday. “It seems they (organisers) did not learn from last year’s debacle.”

Kagga is the producer of TV drama series Beneath the Lies.
The night had started off quite well with glamour on the red carpet. But once inside the Victoria Ballroom, the mess began to show. Salvador Idringi and Malaika Nyanzi’s microphones failed to start in due time for spot on introduction.
And then came the Kagga moment.
The award for best radio host instead wound up as “Galaxy Fm” and best radio station became Mckenzie. The inconsistency and lack of correspondence between what the awards presenters were saying, what was showing on the screen and the results in the envelop was plain laughable.
There was a consistent mix of sexes in the categories of best actor and actress, female and male radio presenter, best female and male sports personality.

“This has happened so much that it has stopped being funny,” said another guest, Micheal Kyabayinze who like Nabatanzi and hundreds others had been disgruntled.
“This always happens at their awards, they are never prepared, they are disorganised, yet these awards are a good idea,” he said.
Besides, the presenters of the awards seemed unprepared with the majority sounding like terrible speakers.
Former Miss Uganda Zahara Nakaigga was left standing in the dark with Phiona Bizu yet they had been called to present best music video, best actress and best actor awards. Instead Michael Owori (Bush Baby) read all three awards with a one Vincent Nsubuga.
To drop the bomb, Yemi Alade performed only one song, I thank you and made adlibs with her song Johnny then left the stage.
However, credit is given where it is due. There was genuine consensus about the winners of the awards, unlike last year.
Eddie Kenzo won Artiste of the Year, Male Artiste and Video of the Year. Best female comedian went to Ann Kansiime, Best Gospel to Levixone, Best RnB to Rema Namakula, Song of the year to Winne Nwangi and Best Female Artiste to Sheeba Karungi…

“This industry is no longer about politics but making music,” said Kenzo who admitted that UEA’s are the first awards ceremony he has attended at home and he felt that in earnest, he had not been cheated.
