I loved this movie because of its simplicity and uniqueness. It is the kind that would get me to applaud if the director was part of the audience. But I was disappointed to learn that it is based on a book, a best seller by Rosalie Ham, which I have not read. I prefer to read the book prior to watching a movie based on the same. Besides, that would make the critiquing job easier. This movie is a bittersweet, comedy-drama set in the early 1950s in Australia. It stars the life of Tilly (Kate Winslet) who believes she is cursed because she was sent away from her home town when she was 10 years old for allegedly killing a boy.
Tilly comes back home transformed, looking hot and chic. The best part is that she is willing to transform the appearances of the other girls and women in her hometown as part of her revenge plan.
But can dresses, however stylish, make people forget and clean Tilly’s family name? Teddy (Liam Hemsworth) believes there is no cleaning that needs to be done in the first place but that does not stop Tilly. The outfits are supposed to help her get information about what really happened in the incident that saw her being sent away from home. It is an interesting watch that anyone should easily enjoy. The costume choice is spot on. Tilly’s mum is easily a favourite character and the suspenseful note on which the movie ends is perfect.
