Doing house music: She is a lawyer and businesswoman but she is also doing quite well in music. Ekky meets her fan Saulo Sserunkuma.
Hi Ekky. What is your second name?
My second name is Brenda but I use Ekky more for branding purposes. I want people to know me by that name.
Do you write your own songs?
Yes I do, apart from Trouble Maker, which I co-wrote with A-Pass.
Which year did you start singing?
I started singing in 2012 with Why Lie as my first single. So far, I have five audios with four videos and three collaborations with the Myth, A-Pass and Cindy as well as Lillian.
What were you doing before you started doing music?
I’m a businesswoman dealing in real estate and interior designing. I was also a practicing lawyer before I decided to concentrate on music.
When did you start writing music?
As far as I remember, I wrote my first song in P3. It was an original composition, and that is how I knew I had the writing talent in me.
Your music is different from what we are used to. What type of music do you sing?
I’m still experimenting but I would like to categorise it as house music.
Why house music in a country where ragga and Afro beat are dominant?
I don’t believe in what is selling. I believe in doing what I’m comfortable with and what my spirit wants.
How would you like to be known in the industry?
That’s a nice question. Well, I would like to be known as a sweet and kind person who left the earth a fairly clean place.
What has been your biggest collaboration so far?
Trouble Maker alongside A Pass because it’s the latest.
Why of all artistes did you decided to do a song with A Pass?
He’s a lyrical master, humble and a good musician.
How do you see Ugandan music lately?
It’s healthy and growing, although we need to define ourselves. We should front our cultures through videos just like Nigerians are doing it. They have an identity.
Your English is so good. Where did you learn it from?
(Laughs). I went to quite nice schools … Nakasero Primary School, Kabojja Secondary School and St Olives in London for my A’ Level. I completed my Law degree at the University of Wales Aberystwyth in 2009.
What don’t people know about you?
I’m a home person, I love gardening, I love fast cars and I’m adventurous.
Where do you see yourself three years from now?
Only God knows. I have entrusted God to run my career and he only knows how.
Which Ugandan celebrity would you date?
Not even one.
Who is your ideal man?
God-fearing, kind, very Intelligent, very tall, neat, generous and elegant.
How would you rank yourself in the music industry?
I’m not competing with anyone, so I’m basically in a league of my own.
How old are you?
I was born in the 80s. That is all I can say.
What is your best movie?
Notebook, but I also love animations.
Between a black and white man, who would you date?
Blood is the same colour.
What tribe are you?
My father is an Itesot while my mother is a Mufumbira. So I’m in between.
What is your view about the leaked nude pictures trending all over social media?
It’s sad and not right for anyone to leak someone’s pictures. I know we women are so naive to take them but we have to be extra careful on how we keep them. I personally can’t have such pictures because I’m working at empowering women, especially the young generation.
