When nature met nightlife: Inside the Ndeku Nyama Choma festival

Over the weekend, the heart of Uganda’s cultural and party spirit beat loud and proud under the lush green canopy of Nyungu Ya Mawe Forest Park. The three-day Ndeku Nyama Choma Festival wasn’t just a celebration—it was a journey through sound, flavor, and heritage.

Day 1 may have begun on a soggy note, as Saturday’s rains danced across the forest, gently erasing footprints from hay-strewn paths. But rather than dampen spirits, the downpour felt like nature’s own reset—a cleansing ritual to prepare the stage for something truly spectacular.

By Sunday afternoon, the air was rich with the smoky perfume of sizzling meats—juicy skewers and slabs of nyama choma roasting over open grills, drawing festivalgoers like moths to flame. And what’s a good roast without a proper drink? This year, Uganda Waragi took center stage with its new Lemon and Ginger variant, served not just in cups, but in traditional “Ndeku” gourds—a brilliant fusion of past and present.

“Uganda Waragi is proud to give our patrons the ability to enjoy in all ways they can,” said Hillary Baguma, Head of Mainstream Spirits at Uganda Breweries.

“This year marks 60 years of Uganda Waragi and we’ve been keen to bring a new twist to cultural celebrations with Lemon & Ginger. It’s a new drink, but today we’re serving it in Ndeku—just as those before us enjoyed their original drink back in 1965.”

The symbolism wasn’t lost on the crowd. As the evening descended, the haze of smoke and sound gave way to something deeply communal. Campers emerged from their tents, drawn toward the rising tempo of Afrobeat, Amapiano, and local Ugandan sounds spun by DJs Critic, Willcuts, and Unknown DJ. With each beat drop, energy levels rose, the forest floor transforming into a euphoric dance haven.

A surprise fashion show interlude cut through the night like a flash of style lightning—models strutted boldly in a mashup of vintage, chic, and experimental Ugandan fashion. It was quick but unforgettable, as the crowd clapped and toasted with raised gourds.

Then came a magical shift. The music slowed, the lights softened, and under the towering trees, Emma Frost took the stage. Acoustic in hand, she cast a spell with stripped-down renditions of hits like “Sijja” (Doctor Brain), “Let It Be” (Geosteady), “Ekyange” (Elijah Kitaka), “Masavu” (Azawi) and “Tabbu” (Ava Peace). Her voice floated above the crowd, who sang back in unison—an impromptu choir under the stars.

There was something timeless about it all. Strangers became kin. Stories were traded over bonfire embers. And everywhere, the iconic Uganda Waragi gourds clinked in cheers.

By the time dawn peeked over the treetops, it wasn’t just another night of music and meat. It was a reminder of what happens when culture, celebration, and community collide in perfect harmony.

As Uganda Waragi marks 60 vibrant years, the Ndeku Nyama Choma Festival proved it’s not just about the drink—it’s about what it brings together: history, heritage, and one hell of a good time.
