Eddy Yawe appeals for understanding over nephew Churchill’s political stance

Family tensions continue to simmer as Dax Vybes and Eddy Yawe, and brothers to Bobi Wine, have stepped in to defend their nephew, Churchill James Ssentamu, following a public outcry over his recent actions.

Ssentamu, the Guild President of Makerere University, found himself at the center of controversy after a photo of him seated next to President Yoweri Museveni during Makerere’s Research and Innovation Week circulated widely on social media. The picture sparked strong reactions, particularly among those who oppose the ruling party, as many viewed the image as an endorsement of the government’s policies.

In the wake of the backlash, Chairman Nyanzi, Ssentamu’s father, publicly urged his son to apologize or step down from his role as Guild President. This move only intensified the public conversation, drawing both support and condemnation.

However, Dax Vybes and Eddy Yawe are urging the public to reconsider their harsh judgment. The Tukigale artist and the respected music figure both expressed their support for Churchill, asking for forgiveness and understanding.

“You will forgive us. He is our child, and we can’t behead him because of that,” said Eddy Yawe in a heartfelt plea. “We should just sit him down and talk to him. We should talk to him, not condemn him. He is still young.”

Their call for dialogue comes at a time when generational and political divides continue to play out in public. While Chairman Nyanzi insists his son should publicly apologize, both Dax and Yawe emphasize the need for family support, urging that they, as relatives, should guide Churchill with patience and understanding rather than harsh condemnation.

Churchill Ssentamu himself has responded to the pressure, acknowledging his father’s comments but standing firm on his role as Guild President. In a public statement, Ssentamu explained that his meeting with President Museveni was part of his duties as Guild President, stating:

“I have heard my father’s comments, and I see where he’s coming from. He has a right, and I respect him. But I am the Guild President, and I have to perform my duties.”

He further appealed to the public, asking them not to hold his family accountable for his actions. Churchill emphasized that his family has always stood up against oppression, suggesting that his actions were motivated by a commitment to fulfilling his responsibilities rather than any political affiliation.

This incident highlights the ongoing clash between generational differences and the political divide in Uganda. For now, it remains unclear how the family will resolve the tension between supporting Churchill’s political autonomy and respecting the traditional views held by his father, Chairman Nyanzi.

One thing is certain, Dax Vybes and Eddy Yawe have added their voices to the growing call for compassion and family unity, encouraging a more understanding approach to the younger generation’s evolving role in Uganda’s political landscape.
