He seemed like the ‘misunderstood’ musician but Maurice Kirya stayed the course, playing the guitar and belting out tunes. In an interview with this magazine in 2010, he said soon people would appreciate his musical craft that fuses jazz, soul, RnB and folk intonations. Today, Maurice Kirya is a respected performer with fame that is cemented with sold-out concerts. Kirya comes from a musical family and cut his musical teeth at a tender age in primary school as a member of a group called The Stranger.
It is a pleasure meeting you, Maurice. What have you been upto lately?
I have done so much in the last 24 years musically, and what is on my mind is how to use the opportunities and knowledge that I have earned to give it to people and talented individuals in a simpler way than I had.
I come from a time where there was no WiFi, so if you got known, it was because you had your music out there, got word out, and people really got to know you.
Today, it is easier to be known because of the Internet for whatever reason, which is a good thing, but then some people want resources and knowledge, and they do not know where to find it.
I feel like I am in a very unique position as a guy who has achieved a very strong and authentic position in the industry, and I believe many people like me, and I want them to hear it from the horse’s mouth and learn from it. So, my meetings are all geared to how I can use this platform and the knowledge to make it simpler for everybody else who wants it and who needs it.
So, what is cooking in your kitchen?
