A Festival of good health and celebration

In a heartfelt effort to improve health access and awareness, Reach A Hand Uganda (RAHU), through its clinic in Mbarara, provided free Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) medical services to hundreds of youth and community members in the region. The outreach, which ran from December 24th to 31st, 2024, was a beacon of hope during the festive season. Medical camps were strategically set up in both urban hubs and remote communities across Mbarara city, offering vital services such as HIV testing and counselling, family planning, cervical cancer screening, blood pressure testing, and the distribution of free condoms. Over 100 community members benefited, with a special focus on engaging youth, who often face barriers to accessing such essential services.

Speaking about the impact, Mr. Ronald Natukunda, a beneficiary, shared, “We are always hustling, and it’s hard to find time to go to the hospital. I appreciate RAHU for bringing these services closer to us. Please continue caring for us.” The initiative spanned key locations in Mbarara district, including Kakoba Roundabout, Nyamityobora HC II in Kizungu, Ruti Trading Center, Ruharo Trading Center/Kiyanja, Rwampara/Nyihanga, and Katereza. RAHU worked hand-in-hand with district health officers and deployed Peer Educators to engage directly with community members. These efforts not only raised awareness about HIV prevention but also addressed other critical health challenges faced by the youth.

Ms. Annet Nassanga, Assistant Nursing Officer at Kamunguzi Health Center II, praised the initiative, noting, “This program reduces the distance and transport costs to hospitals while alleviating congestion in health facilities.” The outreach culminated in the vibrant Katereza Festival on December 31st, a community celebration to welcome the new year. Alongside health education and medical services, the festival featured lively entertainment, including performances by Allan Toniks, Ray Signature, Kachaina Comedy, and more. Attendees enjoyed a football match, a movie screening, and a dazzling fireworks display at midnight.

RAHU boss Humphrey Nabimanya

During the medical camps, RAHU CEO Humphrey Nabimanya emphasized the importance of empowering young people with accurate information about their sexual and reproductive health. He stated, “At RAHU, we have a responsibility to raise awareness and shift mindsets about SRHR. This allows young people to make informed choices, contribute to reducing new infections, and support the achievement of the 90-90-90 treatment target.”

Uganda faces a growing challenge in addressing youth-focused health issues. According to the Uganda AIDS Commission, young people account for 34% of new HIV infections annually. With an HIV prevalence rate of 5.4% among adults aged 15-49—disproportionately affecting women—initiatives like RAHU’s are vital. Cervical cancer, a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Ugandan women, is more common among HIV-positive individuals, further highlighting the need for targeted interventions. Family planning services, despite showing high uptake among HIV-positive individuals, continue to face barriers such as unplanned pregnancies.

Through its festive outreach, RAHU has not only brought essential healthcare services to the doorstep of many in Mbarara but has also inspired a renewed commitment to community health. With continued efforts, the organization remains a transformative force in empowering Uganda’s youth to take charge of their health and well-being.
