In a glamorous New Year’s event, Miss Prossy Atukunda Kirungi was crowned the first-ever Miss Ntungamo in a beauty contest organized by the Ntungamo Students Association. The 21-year-old Kyamate Secondary School student, who is currently on vacation, beat four other contenders to take the coveted title.
“I was inspired by my family to contest,” Miss Atukunda said in an interview after the contest. “They provided everything and cared for me, and they want me to push even further for the region and later national level.” With a strong academic background, having taken physics, entrepreneurship, and mathematics at A-level, Miss Atukunda hopes to pursue software engineering in university.
The contest, which aimed to identify young leaders who can guide their peers, assessed contestants on their conscience, physical and knowledge essentials, as well as their ability to identify with issues affecting the country, district, family, and relationships. “We want youths who can guide peers in many things; how to care for their bodies, how to interpret relationships, and understand politics,” said Mr. Christopher Muhwezi, President of the Ntungamo Students Association.
During the contest, candidates were grilled with questions on various topics, including tourism, hygiene, governance, trade, and commerce, as well as family planning and contraceptive use. They also participated in a catwalk, dressing competition, photo shoots, and ICT-related activities.
Mr. Eric Kakyafu, a Ntungamo-based lawyer who presided over the award ceremony, urged young people to come out and defend their rights, especially when faced with oppression. “As youth, we are normally underrated, we are oppressed and misguided. We must come out as a number and defend our rights, we must fight oppression. Come out and be leaders,” he said.
The event, which was sponsored by Kama Edits photography, also saw Mr Kenya Abel being selected as the Mr Ntungamo. The contest was held at the Ntungamo Resort Hotel, and it marked a significant milestone in the district’s efforts to promote youth leadership and empowerment.
