Mugabi’s live recording at the National Theatre was a big deal

Kenneth Mugabi

Over the years, Uganda has had people releasing live compilations over the time. You should have watched clips of Tusker Malt Conversessions that Swangz Avenue usually releases on streaming platforms and concert recordings.

Such live recordings in the past have included Spice Diana’s Up Close and Personal, which she recorded and quietly released during the Covid-19 pandemic, Maurice Kirya’s Live at Kirya Live 2023 and Kenneth Mugabi’s Valentine Xperience from 2022.

While many of these somehow exist as live albums, they were not intended for that purpose. Spice Diana was recording a virtual concert, Maurice Kirya staged a concert and so did Mugabi.

This has also been the case with many live albums. They are recordings most people who did not intend to be albums.

Of course, all this changes with some few standouts, an example of James Brown’s Live at the Apollo in 1963, the man pitched the idea and all executives thought it was not brilliant. In fact, he self-funded the show and was prepared to self-release it.
