Buganda Prime Minister (Katikkiro) Charles Peter Mayiga has slammed musicians Gereson Wabuyi, better known as Gravity Omutujju and Yasiin Mukasa, alias Lil Pazo for singing vulgar songs.
The Katikkiro questioned the motive by the two musicians who have widely been condemned by moralists.
“You have deviated from developing talent now you are spreading obscenity? What is your intention? Popularity? People may cheer you on but that’s how far you can go. Imagine if Fred Sebbata did that the 40 years he was active in the industry, I don’t think anyone would want to associate with him now. If you want to spread obscenity, do it in your bedroom,’ Mayiga said.
He urged the duo to emulate their likes of Carol Nantongo and Lydia Jazmine whose songs he said carry meaning to their fans.
“There are so many things you can sing about. I have never seen Lydia Jazmine singing obscene things. The other day when I met Carol Natogop, I told her that her job is not just to entertain fans but to educate them as well. To create good music takes time. It’s a big job and takes a lot of sacrifice. It’s like an advocate practising law as their daily job. Talent is complicated. Take time and develop it,” he added before lauding veteran musicians whose songs are still relevant and carry meaning to Ugandans even decades after passed on or stopped being active.
This comes days after the Uganda Natioal Cultural Centre (UNCC) on December 3 summoned the two for a meeting over their vulgar songs.
“The main purpose of this meeting is to have a dialogue about your vulgar content produced and promoted like Okwepicha, Enyama, Doozi and Omunio the latest release and Enkudi, Ensujju for Lil Pazo Lunabe. All this content does not align with Ugandan norms, culture and the creative sector as a whole. Please endeavour to attend i persson for the betterment and sustainability of the creative sector for the future generation,” reads part of the letter signed by the vice chairperson UNCC board of trustee, Phina Mugerwa.
