Why celebrated Nigerian film star Stella Damasus is coming to Uganda

Stella Damasus

Uganda’s film industry is about to have  knowledge addition as Nollywood icon Stella Damasus plans to host a four-day workshop for actors this January. From January 13th to 16th, 2025, Ugandan actors will have the rare opportunity to learn directly from one of Africa’s celebrated stars.

Known for her performances in over 70 films, Stella Damasus has become a household name in African cinema. But beyond her acting accolades, she is also a director, producer, and founder of An Actors Playhouse—a platform designed to nurture emerging talent across the continent.

This January, Damasus is bringing her expertise to Uganda, offering practical training to actors keen on refining their skills for auditions, roles, and long-term careers. Organized by ValRich Arts and supported by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), the workshops are set to be more than just a learning experience—they’re a chance to connect Uganda’s growing film industry with Nollywood, Africa’s largest and most influential film hub.

“This is not just about acting. It is about empowering our actors to think globally and collaborate across borders. Opportunities like these can shape careers and build bridges for Uganda’s film industry,” said Valentino R. Kabenge, the founder of ValRich Arts and a member of An Actors Playhouse.

Earlier this year, Kabenge participated in An Actors Playhouse’s talent showcase in Nigeria, where he performed in front of Nollywood luminaries like Kate Henshaw and Shaffy Bello. That experience opened doors for Kabenge and inspired him to bring similar opportunities back home.

With workshops addressing everything from role preparation to navigating the industry, participants can expect more than just technical tips. Damasus is known for her hands-on approach and dedication to fostering creativity, making this event a promising step for Uganda’s budding actors.

As Uganda continues to build its reputation in the global film market, initiatives like these highlight the importance of collaboration and mentorship. For actors looking to make their mark, January’s workshop is one opportunity not to miss.
