In an unexpected turn, emerging artiste Gloria Bugie found herself detained at Jinja Road Police Station yesterday, facing charges under the Computer Misuse Act. Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed her arrest, explaining that the matter has now been referred to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for review.
“A lady known as Gloria Bugie spent the night in our cells at Jinja Road. If you remember, some time ago, her nude clips circulated on social media, sparking concern among Ugandans,” Onyango said. “A gentleman named Abitex expressed his concerns formally, prompting investigations into Gloria Bugie’s actions.”
According to Onyango, law enforcement took action to question the artist after concluding preliminary investigations. “We hope that after she gives a statement, the file will go to the DPP for guidance on the next steps. It will ultimately be up to the DPP to decide when she may face court,” Onyango added.
Gloria Bugie was released later, with media capturing clips of her departure from the police station, further fueling the story’s momentum on social media.
The arrest follows a legal complaint filed in September by events promoter Abbey Musinguzi, known as Abitex, who alleged that Bugie had violated Uganda’s Anti-Pornography Act and the Computer Misuse Act. Legal documents dated September 17, 2024, reveal that Abitex formally requested the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) to investigate Bugie after a video surfaced online showing the singer dancing in the nude. According to Abitex, her actions not only disturbed public sensibilities but also constituted an offense under Section 2 of the Anti-Pornography Act.
Abitex’s complaint did not end with the video; he further alleged that Bugie frequently attends public events in revealing attire, behavior he deems inappropriate and offensive to the public. His concerns highlight ongoing discussions around artistic freedom, morality, and the balance between individual expression and societal values.
The case has drawn attention from both fans and critics, with many waiting to see how authorities handle the matter amid debates on privacy, artistic expression, and public decency in Uganda.
