Hon. Martin Mugarra Bahinduka, Uganda’s Minister of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, has shared the rationale behind selecting Kasese as the host for this year’s Tourism Day celebrations, scheduled for September 27 at Nyakasanga Grounds.
Speaking at the launch of Tourism Day activities at Fairway Hotel on Tuesday, Minister Mugarra explained that Kasese was chosen because of its history of conflict and instability, which has left lasting scars on the community. He emphasized that the region’s resilience and recovery make it a fitting example of the role tourism can play in fostering peace and reconciliation.
“The region’s story of resilience serves as a powerful testament to the transformative power of tourism in rebuilding communities, restoring hope, and creating a path toward a peaceful and prosperous future,” said the Minister.
Mugarra highlighted Kasese’s rich tourism potential, particularly the Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the “Mountains of the Moon.” The region offers unique experiences for adventurers, nature lovers, and cultural enthusiasts alike, including hiking, trekking, and exploring cultural sites, while enjoying local hospitality.
This year’s Tourism Day theme, “Tourism and Peace,” aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in promoting decent work and economic growth.
“The theme is especially meaningful for Kasese. Despite its hardships, Kasese is a beautiful region with a rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes. By focusing our celebrations here, we are sending a powerful message that tourism can overcome adversity, rebuild communities, and pave the way for a peaceful and prosperous future,” added Mugarra.
The Tourism Month activities began on September 10 and will culminate on September 29. Alongside the main celebration in Kasese, the month will feature various events including sports activities, musical performances headlined by Bebe Cool, the Miss Tourism Grand Final, CCFU Heritage Awards, a peace conference at Rwenzori International Hotel, a medical camp, and the “Explore Uganda Peace Concert.”
The celebrations aim to showcase Uganda’s diverse tourism offerings while emphasizing the important role that tourism plays in fostering peace and development.
