Sammie and Shawa: The comedy duo taking Uganda by storm

Sammie and Shawa

The Ugandan comedy scene has witnessed a surge in dynamic duos, with acts like Madrat and Chiko, Merry Hearts, and Maulana and Reign gaining widespread popularity. However, the newest comedic force capturing hearts and laughter across the country is the hilarious pair of Sammie and Shawa. Their skits have rapidly made them a household name, and they are quickly becoming a force to reckon with in Uganda’s entertainment scene.

A Dream Come True

Sammie and Shawa’s journey began in 2022 when they met during an audition for The Salvador Show, a platform created by renowned comedian Patrick Idringi alias Salvador. Both comedians shared a common goal: to rise to fame in Uganda’s comedy industry. At the time of their first encounter, they had already adopted their stage names, Sammie and Shawa, respectively.

Their first big break came later that year when they performed at Mayor’s Gardens in Kyengera, an event organized by Kadongokamu singer-turned-politician Mathias Walukagga. Their unique brand of humor resonated with audiences, and they began to build a fanbase on social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube with skits such as “Maama ne Taata Jonah” and the “Abundancy Series.”

Comedy Store Success

By 2022, Sammie and Shawa had made their way to one of Uganda’s largest comedy platforms, Comedy Store, a dream gig for most aspiring comedians. However, success didn’t come easy—they had to pass auditions to secure their spot. Initially performing as curtain raisers every two weeks, the duo’s comedic genius soon earned them a regular weekly slot, cementing their place as rising stars in the industry.

Their creativity knows no bounds, as they have also garnered attention for their humorous skits mimicking prominent Ugandan figures, including President Yoweri Museveni and National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine. This unique approach has expanded their reach and garnered even more public interest.

Big Dreams Ahead

Sammie and Shawa’s ambitions go beyond performing on popular platforms. The duo dreams of organizing Uganda’s first-ever comedy show in a stadium, a feat traditionally reserved for musicians.

“We want to take comedy to a new level. Just as musicians hold concerts at large venues like Lugogo Cricket Oval, our dream is to do the same for comedy. Uganda has many comedy fans who are often limited by space, so we envision a show at a large venue,” Shawa shared.

Sammie added, “If we mobilize all our fans, we’re confident they would fill the venue. If we’re not ready, we won’t rush it, but many fans are already asking for a concert.”

Background and Journey to Comedy

Sammie’s Biography

Sammie, born Sam Muwanguzi, hails from Busaabi village in Bugaya Sub-county, Buyende District. A proud Musoga, Sammie is the son of Mugulusi Geoffrey and Mukisa Tapenensi. He attended Life Skill Nursery and Primary School in Beekula village before moving to St. Elizabeth Secondary School in Kituukiro for high school. After completing his Senior Four, Sammie pursued technical training at City Polytechnic Institute in Kyengera, where he earned a certificate and later a diploma in electrical engineering from 2016 to 2022.

Shawa’s Biography

Shawa, born Ssali Shaufal, is from Bombo, Kalule, and was raised in Nansana, Wakiso District. He comes from a family led by Hajj Yusuf Kiggundu. Shawa attended Nansana Central Academy for his primary education and Alliance High School in Nansana for his O-levels, completing his A-levels at Ngando Senior Secondary School in Butambala District. He, too, pursued technical training at City Polytechnic Institute in Kyengera, specializing in mechanical engineering. Before teaming up with Sammie, Shawa was part of the Bassekimpi Comedians, a duo that eventually disbanded.

Despite their different backgrounds, Sammie and Shawa have found common ground in their passion for comedy and their desire to entertain. Their chemistry on stage and creativity in crafting skits have made them one of Uganda’s most promising comedy acts.

The Future Looks Bright

With a growing fanbase, regular performances at Comedy Store, and bold ambitions for the future, Sammie and Shawa are proving that they are more than just a comedy duo—they are pioneers pushing the boundaries of Uganda’s comedy scene. Fans eagerly await their next move, as these two continue to bring laughter and joy to audiences across the country.
