Jose Chameleone can be defined in many ways, but above all, he is a legendary artist. His status as a music icon was celebrated last Saturday evening at the Kampala Serena Hotel’s Victoria Hall during his concert, aptly titled ‘Legend in Gold’, marking 25 years of his illustrious career. The event was organized by Bugingo Events, Malembe Lifestyle, and I&M Bank.
Twenty-five years ago, Chameleone returned to Uganda from Kenya, where he, along with Bebe Cool, had begun his professional music career. Unlike Bebe Cool, Chameleone decided to cut his stay in Nairobi short and return to Uganda, eager to apply the lessons he had learned during his two years there. His return revolutionized Ugandan music, earning him the bragging rights of having dethroned Congolese music, which had dominated Ugandan charts for too long.
Chameleone’s performance at the ‘Legend in Gold’ concert proved once again why he is considered a legend. Despite having held a major concert just last year at the Cricket Oval, fans turned up in large numbers, eager to support him, and he did not disappoint. For close to four hours, Chameleone delivered an electrifying performance, singing over 40 songs across four sessions, backed by the Maestro band.
What made his performance unique was that, for the first time, he completed all his songs without interruption, leaving the audience thoroughly satisfied. The setlist catered to fans from every era of his career, from early hits like Jamila, Bei Kali, Fuga Bi, Befuula, Maama Mia, Nekolera Maali, and Dorotia to more recent favorites like Kigwa Leero, Forever, and Baliwa.
He was also joined by fellow artists such as Bushoke from Tanzania, with whom he performed Maama Rhoda, and Ferooz, with whom he sang Sivyo Ndivyo. Other artists who graced the stage included Bebe Cool, Weasel, Redsan, Mesach Semakula, D-Star of Ozambe fame, and Chagga.
Fenon Events played a crucial role in making this celebration extraordinary. After their remarkable work with Chameleone last year, he placed his full trust in them. They delivered once again, building a massive stage with impressive graphics that complemented the music. The sound quality was flawless, with microphones that were clear and instantly replaced if any issues arose.
Chameleone’s attention to detail extended to his wardrobe, as he changed outfits for each session, and in some cases, after a single performance. Throughout the evening, he reminded the audience that he is the greatest asset they have, and that music is his sole offering. He also encouraged them to connect deeply with the lyrics of his songs.
In a heartfelt moment, Chameleone honored those who have contributed to his music journey, including Bebe Cool, his brothers Pallaso and Weasel, his former manager Sam Mukasa, his current manager Mutima, his mother, and Chagga, his former backup manager.
The success of the ‘Legend in Gold’ concert not only reaffirmed Chameleone’s legendary status but also marked a significant milestone in Hannington Bugingo’s career in event management.
