Meta introduces monetization features for Kenyan creators on Facebook

Kenyan creators can now earn money from their video and reel content on Facebook and Instagram, thanks to the rollout of new monetization features by Meta, the parent company of these platforms.

On Tuesday, Meta announced that eligible creators in Kenya will be able to take advantage of In-Stream Ads on Facebook and Ads on Facebook Reels to generate income from their original videos. This development follows a meeting between Kenyan President William Ruto and the Facebook management team in March, where they discussed ways to help Kenyans monetize their online content and create more job opportunities for the country’s youth.

Speaking on the rollout, Moon Baz, Global Partnerships Lead for Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey at Meta, said: “Every day, we’re inspired by the incredible African creators who use Facebook to tell their stories, connect with others, and bring people together. This expansion will empower eligible creators in Kenya’s vibrant creative industry to earn money, set a high bar for creativity worldwide, and make Meta’s family of apps a one-stop shop for all creators.”

President Ruto also shared the news with Kenyans through his social media channels, saying: “Starting today, Kenyan content creators can monetize their videos on Meta platforms. We urge our creatives to take advantage of this opportunity not only to enhance their incomes but also to create job opportunities for others. We will continue to seek more opportunities for our youth to explore their talents.”

To participate, creators must meet specific requirements, including compliance with Facebook’s Partner Monetization Policies and Content Monetization Policies. They must also be at least 18 years old. For In-Stream Ads, creators need to have a minimum of 5,000 followers.

What You Need to Know About Facebook In-Stream Ads and Ads on Facebook Reels

In-Stream Ads can appear before, during, or after on-demand videos, whether it’s pre-recorded content or a recording of a previous livestream. These include pre-roll ads (playing before the video), mid-roll ads (during the video), image ads (static images displayed beneath the content), and post-roll ads (at the end of the video).

Ads on Facebook Reels are seamlessly integrated into original reels, allowing creators to earn money based on the performance of their reels while entertaining their audience.

Kenya now joins countries like Egypt and South Africa in being eligible for monetization on Meta platforms.
