Five years ago, Nigerian star Joseph Akifenwa, known as Joeboy, performed in Uganda at the Malembe Block Party held at the Guvnor parking lot. At the time, Joeboy, who was signed to Empawa, had only one hit song titled ‘Baby’, which he performed five times during his set.
Fast forward five years, Joeboy has returned to Uganda, this time with a repertoire of over 20 songs. During a press conference held today at MCI Media Hub in Tirupati Mazima Mall to announce his upcoming performance at the Lavida Rave at Hockey Grounds tomorrow, Joeboy expressed his special affection for Uganda and his desire to give back to his Ugandan fans for their unwavering support throughout his career.
“I’m so happy to be back in Uganda; I love this place. The first time I performed outside my country was in Uganda in 2019, and I had only one song, ‘Baby’. ‘Baby’ actually became popular in Uganda before it did in Nigeria. It was among the top two songs here. So Uganda is one of the most important foundations in my musical growth,” Joeboy admitted.
He added that he has always wanted to return and have a more immersive experience. “I didn’t want to come back just for a show, but to have an experience, and that’s where the whole idea of Lavida came from.”
Joeboy, known for hits like ‘Sip’, ‘Beginning’, ‘My Baby’, ‘Call’ and ‘Low Key’ will be engaging closely with his Ugandan fans, including playing a FIFA Tournament before his performance. Other activities to look forward to include Karaoke, DJ Battles, with the winners receiving a return ticket to any destination that Air Uganda flies to, among other exciting events.
