A Family Affair follows Zara Ford (King), a young woman who discovers that her single mother Brooke (Kidman) is having an affair with her self-absorbed, movie star boss Chris Cole (Efron). The film marks the third instance of Efron and Kidman sharing the big screen, the first being The Paperboy in 2012 followed by The Butler which will be released next year.
“I am starting to feel things that I never thought I would feel again, not since your father died,” Brooke admits to her daughter in the trailer. Zara roars back at her mother, “No! You did not just say that!”
King has been a staple of the Netflix original catalog since starring as Elle Evans in the Kissing Booth film trilogy. Efron’s first appearance in a Netflix production was in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile where he starred as serial killer Ted Bundy. He was then given his own reality show Down to Earth in 2020. Kidman’s first and only appearance in a Netflix film was in The Prom in 2020.
Although originally slated for release in November of 2023, A Family Affair was pushed to 2024 due to WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
