Musician Derrick Ddungu, popularly known as Rickman, is set to make his film debut in the Ugandan biopic “Slum Bomber”, releasing in November. Rickman has been hinting at a career in film on social media, and this project marks his entry into the industry.
“Slum Bomber” tells the story of a young girl from a post-war village who discovers boxing in the city. Despite an unexpected pregnancy, she rises above her challenges to inspire women. The movie features lead actor Jackline Nafula, a 24-year-old kickboxing champion from Kenya, who plays the role of Julie Aloyo.
Executive Producer Maureen Nankya explained that she was drawn to the story because of the lack of representation of women in sports. “I realized that I had more stories about men than women, and I wanted to tell a story that would inspire women,” she said.
The movie is partly a biopic and aims to convey a message of resilience and determination. “The movie shows that you can overcome any obstacle and become a champion,” said Dialo Ssekidde, screenwriter and producer.
“Slum Bomber” is one of the 14 winners of the Content Support Development Fund, a grant offered by the Uganda Communications Commission to support locally scripted film projects in 2023.
Rickman expressed his honor to be part of the project, playing the role of “Sweetest”. He hopes to inspire young people, especially women, to believe in themselves and follow their dreams.”
